Only in NY: A "WTF?" Moment
I dropped off my laundry this morning and my laundry lady was busy wrapping her stomach with saran wrap. Yards and yards of it. She said in her voice that sounds a lot like Rosie Perez, "Sorry just give me a minute. I want my belly to look like yours." Since her belly is always exposed, I could see why she'd want to improve on its looks.

Thoughts DO become things!
I was invited to attend the Golden Trailer Awards tomorrow night and was bringing Christian as my plus one. I was hoping to meet a few people involved in the production that I could introduce Christian to in hopes of getting him involved next year. Then today I got the call that they would like him to present an award! Awesome! --Kambri Even more awesome? The gift bag!

Boggle!
Dining on my pal's rooftop over the weekend and enjoying the company, I discovered a new game: BOGGLE. Excellent! I want a travel sized one for my birthday in June so I sent the request to Christian. A $5 game and plenty of time to sit in the sun playing along with a bottle of wine. What could be better? And we'll be in Austin, to boot, so the sun is pretty much guaranteed. I can't wait!
In anticipation of that trip and our annual trek to Houston, I've been contacting old friends IN ADVANCE to hopefully have some mini-reunions. That whole advance thing is important. Another reason I sent my Boggle request to Christian so there's a full three weeks to prepare. I actually almost bought it myself then realized that's a really lame thing to do when there's a gift giving occasion on the horizon. Too late to stop the shipment of my three new Fossil watches. Oops. If only Boggle made a watch-sized version.
--Kambri Seriously. Check out Fossil...they have some great stuff out these days! I couldn't resist!

For the longest time I've had three iPods, none of which were used: an old, original 10GB one, a Nano and a new 30GB one that Comedy Central gave Christian as part of the college tour. For reasons too boring and annoying to relate, I couldn't use them. But today, thanks to the magic of SharePod and the time and determination a 3-day weekend can grant, I have regained the use of my old one, restored the music wiped out from my Nano and laptop and broke the seal on the new one. FYI for Mac users, senuti is the program you would need if you ever "lose" your music. Savior!
Even though it took a while and nearly made me have a breakdown, it got done and I still managed to sleep in, read the papers with my morning coffee, join the new gym that finally opened after my old one shut down, get in a nice workout, grocery shop, make tuna salad and it's not even 6:00!
--Kambri Time for some R&R, I'd say!

Meme Tag
Leave it to Tigger to make me take time out to think about stuff other than work! She tagged me with a meme and, what the hell, I did it:
1. What were you doing 10 years ago? Suffering through a miserable banking job in Columbus, Ohio and doing liquor and tobacco marketing / promotions at night to keep me otherwise occupied.
2. What were you doing 1 year ago? Working on the Meow Mix House, promoting Christian's Miami appearance with MySpace and other PR stuff.
3. 5 snacks you enjoy: Salt & Vinegar potato chips, pickles, popcorn, olives & Greek dips like hummus or tzatziki.
4. 5 songs that you know all the lyrics: Pour Some Sugar on Me, , Love Will Keep Us Together, Jamie's Cryin' or most any other DLR-era Van Halen, and tons of AC/DC.
5. 5 things you would do if you were a millionaire: open a sanctuary for rescued animals, buy an apartment in the city, buy a country house with a porch, get a big BBQ grill (I miss cooking / eating outside with friends), join the Zone diet or some other service that sends me good, healthy food that I don't have to prepare.
6. 5 bad habits: biting my fingernails, excessive internet surfing, interrupting, letting calls go to voice mail, eating out for every single meal.
7. 5 things you like doing: --Reading the morning paper with a cup of deli coffee --New York magazine crossword puzzles while I soak in the tub --Watching marathons of Forensic Files or similar shows while I catch up reading my periodicals, --Playing in bed with Paquita the first 30 minutes after I wake up. It's the most fun, cute, great way to wake up, -- Dining out with Christian be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. We always have the most leisurely, amazing meals and conversation.
8. 5 things you would never wear again: --Spandex pants (ohmygod I hope there are NO photos), --Fake fingernails (good one Tigger), --Pantyhose, --Pink lipstick, --Mini skirts.
9. 5 favorite toys: my animals, Playstation, travel Scrabble, Tivo and the internet.

The work never ends.
We're going to see our friend Annie in Back From the Front. She's a great actress from the bits I've seen of her TV work, but I have never seen her on stage. Sounds like a very interesting play but also potentially depressing.
I'm not up for that as I'm in a frustrated funk. I've been busy cleaning up the mess that happens when programming schedules get changed. JB Smoove had to cancel next week as the headliner at Comix because the filming of his new movie is going over by two days. Sigh.
Donnell Rawlings ("Ashy Larry" and other memorable characters from Chappelle's Show) along with Russ Meneve, Baron Vaughn and a surprise guest you know from Chappelle's Show as well will perform instead. So, it will still be a great show, just a lot of work for me.
If you're interested in tickets, call 212.524.2500 or visit www.comixny.com. Save $5.00 with the promo code "DRVIP". Showtimes are 8:00 & 10:30PM on FRI & Sat, JUN 1 & 2.

I'm Stoopid
I'm a dum, stoopid fool for not having kept up with Love, Daddy. I had a long, leisurely dinner with Christian tonight to talk about a proposal I've been hem-hawing about getting done. This, of course, led me to think of the June 4th reading I'm doing at the People's Improv Theater and how I should make more effort to memorize pieces. Performing them, I think, will be infinitely better than any reading considering the nature of sign language coupled with my personality. I am sure of this especially after having seen Jonathan Ames a few times now. He left me slack-jawed after I saw him perform on Fresh Meat at Comix. But about June 4th I thought, "Gosh, I don't have any new stories to tell." So I checked out Love, Daddy and proved that I'm an idiot. I've visited My Jailed Deaf Dad twice since he shacked up in his Huntsville, Texas abode. Both times I have left with dozens of "WTF?" kinds of tales. I'm gonna hop back on this bandwagon and share some more stories that I hope to lift "from the page to the stage". In the meantime, I hope you'll renew any interest you may have had. And, to ensure a new pot of story telling gold, I'm going back to visit in July. So, mark your calendars. I'm smuggling in a What-A-Burger and my mom's homeade chocolate chip cookies this time. No more attempts at sneaking in illegal contraband for me. And now that Christian is officially a family member, he gets to sit for four hours in a prison yard in the Houston heat. They don't talk about that on Best Week Ever, do they? --Kambri

Should have laid money down in Vegas.
Texting with an American Idol obsessed friend, I discovered an old message to him time stamped 4/19 @ 12:30 AM:
"jordin's my new pick to win...gets better & better and is young and cute. But I still love my kiki!"

Fresh Meat and American Idol Stuff
There is another stellar line up for tonight's Fresh Meat. The likes of Bill Burr, Judy Gold, Tom Shillue and, rumor has it, a surprise spot by Dave Attell. It's cheap, it's funny, it's interesting and you should go since it's probably the last one for a while.
I'm super happy that Jordin Sparks won. I know legions of people got screwed over by the Tivo / DVR recording, though, including Christian. He sat through two hours of such nonsense filler only to find out he missed the winner being named and her final performance. I felt bad for him but luckily the internet saved his day so he can still talk about it on this week's Best Week Ever. Thank. God. Heh.

Gambling at a "Christian" Rock Show?
We had a private poker game in the downstairs lounge at Comix while God's Pottery taped their sets for Comedy Central Records in the main showroom. So there was a den of sin down below all the "Christian" singing and good cheer. We had a live feed from the stage playing on our flat screens so I didn't have to miss the show while I gambled. I was ahead for a while but, wow, poker lasts a LONG time. I started losing patience as the beer and hunger sunk in. I was happy to be sitting at a table of the newer players. We were cheering each other on, laughing and yelling while the other table looked so serious and intense.
As for the taping, it was a big success with a crowd of about 200 people. They should have a great recording from it and I look forwar to sharing the final product with you all once it's online.

Two Upcoming Don't Miss Events
There are two great events on June 4th that will fit anyone's budget.
First, there's a red carpet comedy show at Comix benefiting the Humane Society of NY and Mighty Mutts. Dave Attell and others have volunteered their comedy services. Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door. Click here for complete details.
After I do the red carpet stuff, I'm hopping in a cab to go perform a piece from "Love, Daddy" (which hasn't been updated in ages, sadly) at the People's Improv Theater. All around great guy and writer for / creator of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Andy Borowitz, will headline. And it's only $5! Here's the scoop:
The PIT Presents the Pendulum Monday, June 4th, 8 P.M. The People's Improv Theater 154 W. 29th Street, NY, NY $5
The PIT Presents the Pendulum is a monthly celebration of the humor writer through short films, readings, performances and poorly veiled character assaults against parents, previous employers and roommates found through Craigslist.
Hosted by Sean Lynch (MTV, Comedy Central, Caroline's) and Francesco Marciuliano (1977 and 1978 Vanderbilt Elementary School Fire Prevention Poster Award-Winner)

Child Actor in a Good Way
I don't watch Medium but have you seen the girl from the show Maria Lark on the late night talk show circuit? She's 9 years old and quite possibly the most hilarious, bigger-than-life character. If I could guarantee my kid would turn out like her then I would renege on my "no kids for me" stance. She met Orlando Bloom on Leno or something and Access Hollywood had the behind the scenes coverage. I had to rewind and watch the segment two more times it was that riotous. What a silly girl.

O&A Stuff
Robert Kelly from HBO's "Tourgasm" is at Comix this weekend and so we had him on Opie & Anthony filling in for Jim Norton. This, of course, is on CBS / terrestrial radio since -- if you missed all the hubbub -- they are on 30 day suspension from XM. They were still provocative but obviously tip toed around some things.
Patrice Oneal will be on next Friday (I think) and should provide some colorful commentary since he's pretty filthy and provocative. If you saw him on FOX the other day then you saw him defending free speech and describing to the President of NOW the difference between the "Angry Pirate" and a "Donkey punch". Heh. Watch the video here.

Homeward Bound
I hope all you mothers had a lovely day yesterday. It was amazingly bright and beautiful here in C-Bus, so what did I do? Stay inside for nearly all of it and work on a proposal. The last show was another sell out and a lot of fun. My ex-niece-in-law made the trek down from Akron and my good friend Zach -- the caller from the radio show -- got to catch the show.
We really didn't do much or see any of C-Bus but we clocked in lots of sleep and general relaxation. I'm not looking forward to returning to the grind. I was embracing this "do nothing but eat and watch movies" existence. Speaking of which...we caught Spiderman 3 on IMax. Cool. Very cool.

Radio was amazing today.
Really, really great radio. We first visited WNCI where I got to say "To all the broken spirits toiling away at Bank One on Polaris Parkway: LEAVE! RUN! Break free and head for the exits!" Then it was on to a country station then on to WBZX where we enjoyed Free Beer Friday and over an hour and a half on the air with Grego, Mo & Randi.
Grego insisted he knew me from somewhere. I assumed Columbus but then he threw out Texas. I said impossible...no one knows the tiny town I'm from. He kept pressing till I mentioned Montgomery to which he said, "You lived off Honea Egypt?" I freaked! The place went nuts and Christian pretended to cry about Grego having possibly slept with me. Then a guy called in saying he knew me from Texas. Then my friend Zach called in and got on the air. Not very exciting when I haphazardly relay the events for this page, but selfishly this entry is more for me to remember the moment when I read through old entries as I sometimes do.
There are two shows tonight, three tomorrow and one on Sunday so if you're in the Columbus, Ohio area stop on by the Funny Bone at Easton.

We're in Columbus and it smells so clean and woodsy. I don't remember it being so lush but from the air you'd think it was the jungle. It is weird being back in a place I lived as a single, debaucherous woman, bored, drinking too much and wasting two solid years of my life. I hate to say I ever regret anything -- getting married at 17, getting divorced, not pursuing this or that -- because it all is on the path that led me to my life in NYC. BUT...Columbus was a waste of two great years.
So now I'm back infinitely more wise, happy and successful and it feels strange but good to know that I wrested myself free of the golden handcuffs that kept me here, threw caution to the wind and took a stab at making it in New York. Whew. Thank GOD that worked out.
The Dispatch ran this interview with Christian to promote his shows at the Funny Bone and this morning he hit three radio stations. Tomorrow he hits three more including WNCI for which my friend Dave used to be a producer. Dave is now in Minnesota running a different radio station but all his old friends are still at WNCI so he refreshed my memory on his old morning crew. Nothing has changed for them. Strange. Like Dave, most of my old friends here have moved away but there are a few still here I hope to see so they can remind me of some of the STUPID stuff I did. Shudder.

Censorship
Since the Imus and JV & Elvis firing and suspension, the radio guys were a little gun shy about our Joke of the Week choice. It was Russ Meneve talking about dressing up like Hitler and driving a taxi so that people would accidentally hail Hitler. They pulled it and we had to scramble to find a clean, non-offensive joke under 20 seconds. Practically impossible. We'll see how long we do this 60 second segment. Meanwhile, I knew Christian's Alaska joke would pass muster so here's the end result. Luckily the FCC doesn't monitor live comedy shows. We'd all be out of jobs.

Multimedia
The radio spots I mentioned in the post below start today on 92.3 FREE FM. The NY1 story was syndicated so it's been playing all over the U.S. so I'm getting random emails every day asking, "Hey, was that you?" Who knew NY1 syndicated their reports?
Christian is headed to Columbus to play the Funny Bone this weekend. I'm tagging along since I haven't been there since I moved away in 2000. I don't miss C-Bus, but it will be nice to get away, stay in a clean hotel near lots of convenient shopping and know the lay o' the land. Anyway, if you're reading and you have no plans, come on out to Easton Town Center.
--Kambri You'll laugh at least once, I guarantee it.

Radio Spots
A while ago I wrote a commercial that ran on RCN cable. I just turned those into some radio spots that will air on 92.3 FREE FM (WFNY) beginning Monday. We'll have a 15 second spot, a 30 second spot then a 60 second spot that will start out with a Joke of the Week where we'll air a joke by a comedian that has been or will be at Comix. The first joke will be of Russ Meneve then it will lead in to our 30 second spot. I think it will make for a good campaign, but time will tell. Anyway, I think they sound great. Click on the links to check them out.

Me On the Tee Vee
Our high tech, cutting edge, late night, interactive, online talk show "Late Net with Ray Ellin" debuted at Comix last night and was profiled on NY1. I had a quick quote on camera and a bunch of people emailed to say they saw it...who knew NY1 had so many fans! I can't get the video to play but here's the article with the video link. I do know that I was sweaty and had dirty hair so I think I'll be okay if I never see it. Ick.

I love it! Rachel did a little live blogging of the Spiderman premiere from our neighborhood Starbucks last night. I saw a Spiderman holding a stuffed version of himself getting on the subway as I was exiting but sadly didn't think to grab a photo. Then I watched Heroes and I was all super powered out.
Speaking of Heroes, Christian (heh) performed his last Comedy Central "Two For Flinching" tour date last night. Greg Giraldo and Nick Thune rounded out the final lineup and they all come back home today. Finally! But now when asked what's going on with Christian, we aren't sure what to say. We're working on some things which very recently included him signing a new manager.
It was a tough process of interviewing, mulling options and ultimately deciding. More than once we remarked at just how Entourage-y the whole thing felt. (That show, despite being nothing more than candy for the brain, really does have the whole Hollywood business thing down to a T.) But it is done and an official announcement will be made soon.
